Abstract:

A REST API for Dspace allows your repository's content to be exposed in a programmatic way, enabling content use/re-use. We will give a brief primer on REST, and compare the REST API to other web services for DSpace, such as SWORD and LNI. The panel will discuss the existing DSpace API projects, the current work on the API Project, and some of the use cases motivating us to build the API. We will also leave time for an audience discussion about the REST API. Bring your questions and use cases to share with the panel to discuss.
Direction for discussion can range from a technical focus on the API, to what value-added services you could build upon an API.

Some of the guiding Use Cases thus far are:

Embed DSpace content into other websites (i.e. JS Widget);

Integrate DSpace content into other systems (i.e. Drupal, Omeka);

Build a user interface or “head” in a lightweight web app framework (i.e. Ruby on Rails).
