It's Not PEI Summer Without Lobster

One of the tastes we highly recommend during your stay is our delicious local lobster. You can find it in many local restaurants, or make plans to visit the Summerside Lobster Carnival, running July 5 - 14 and overlapping the conference.

Summerside is a scenic hour's drive from Charlottetown, so a vehicle is required, but putting together a road trip posse is exactly why we have Crowdvine.

Celebrate Canada Day in PEI!

A week prior to the conference is Canada Day! Regardless of where you are from, we invite you to come take part in our festivities and join us in our celebrations. For those arriving for the conference early, we highly recommend taking in some of our highlighted activities taking place in Charlottetown over Canada Day Weekend:

Islandora is Giving Away a Free OR2013 Registration

Are you a fan of getting things for free? As part of its annual Camp (July 7th), Islandora is holding a tee-shirt design contest, with free registrations for both Islandora Camp and Open Repositories 2013 as prizes. Details and how to enter are available here.

Early Bird Rate Extended - Wednesday May 15

Owing to issues with PayPal processing on Friday that prevented some registrations, we are extending our Early Bird Rate through Wednesday, May 15. We apologize for any inconvenience these technical issues may have caused for our guests.

If you are having trouble with PayPal, please try the following:

  • Look at the top of the PayPal page. Does it say "The card you entered cannot be used for this payment"? You may have to sign up for a PayPal account to complete payment. Security on some credit cards will not allow their use without an associated PayPal account.
  • If that does not work, please select "Other" as your payment method and contact us directly at or2013@or2013.net.

Dear Repository Community,

Open Repositories 2013 is coming up soon - July 8-12 in beautiful Prince Edward Island. We had an awesome response to the request for proposals and an initial list of sessions is available at:

http://or2013.net/content/accepted-sessions

We are also getting final details in place for the Hackfest and Dev Challenge, but in the meantime we have an initial information page available at:

The Conference team is working hard on making sure the facilities are ready and that you also have an engaging set of social activities to meet with your colleagues and have fun. We want to encourage you to take advantage of our Early Bird registration, valid until May 10, after which the fee will go from $450 to $495. We would also encourage you to book your flights and accommodation as soon as you can to make sure you get a front row seat for what is shaping up to be a great conference.

We look forward to seeing you in PEI!

Dev Challenge and Hackfest

The Developer’s Challenge has been associated with the Open Repositories Conference since 2008, and has been one of the key events at the annual conference. The traditional approach has been to provide participants with a theme:

  • “Show us something new and cool in the world of Open Repositories” in 2012;
  • “Show Us the Future of Repositories” in 2011;
  • “Create a functioning repository user-interface, presenting a single metadata record which includes as many automatically created, useful links to related external content as possible” in 2010;
  • and “Show us the future of repositories” in 2009.

A core part of the theme for the 2013 Conference (Use, Reuse, Reproduce) is that we need to ensure effective collaboration in the repository community in order to achieve the best outcomes. The goal of the approach to the Dev Challenge for 2013 is to encourage participation from all in the context of the Developer Challenge Manifesto and recognize and encourage great ideas from all corners of the repository community. Everyone can participate in the Developer’s Challenge and we encourage non-programmers and programmers alike to get involved and join in.

Looking to explore PEI?

Although you will get to experience Atlantic Canadian culture, culinary and entertainment while attending the conference in downtown Charlottetown, we are encouraging our delegates to take the time to experience the rest of the island! An excellent way to do this is by renting a car to explore everything PEI has to offer. Discount Car Rental is offering discounted rates for our OR2013 delegates. Please visit our "Transportation on the Island" page for more information.

Call for Proposals Now Closed

The Open Repositories 2013 call for proposals has now closed. Response to the call was excellent and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to our friends and colleagues who together submitted more than 150 of their ideas for sessions, workshops, 24x7s, and posters. The review process will be underway shortly.
